What We Do

Calvert Hospice provides care for the terminally ill and bereaved in Calvert County.  Those living with a terminal illness and their families receive support and comprehensive services from an interdisciplinary team of dedicated, caring professionals and volunteers.  These caregivers attend the patient at home, whether home is a house, apartment, family member's residence, group home or nursing facility.

The patient's wish for the best quality of life possible serves as the team's central goal.  This means that the Hospice nurse will address any pain or other distressing symptoms promptly and completely.  Social work and chaplaincy services tend to the patient's and family's needs for psychosocial, emotional and spiritual care.  Personal care aides, volunteers and other members of the Hospice team help the patient to retain dignity, autonomy, and control as life ends.

In addition to the attention and support of the interdisciplinary team, Hospice services include drugs, medical supplies, and medical equipment such as a bed or wheelchair that may be needed by the patient in connection with his or her terminal illness.  Respite care is available for family members depleted by the courageous task of caring for a loved one at home.

Although Hospice care is included as a benefit under most insurance policies, including Medicare, Hospice care in Calvert County is available to anyone in need regardless of their ability to pay.   No one living with a terminal illness is turned away from Hospice because of lack of funds.

Support for the patient's family continues for 13 months following the death of their loved one.   Calvert Hospice Bereavement Services staff and volunteers provide personal attention, compassion and comfort to those experiencing the pain of loss.

Bereavement Services are also available to anyone in Calvert County grieving the loss of a loved one, even when the deceased was not Hospice patient.  These services include a weekly support group, the Time to Heal, support groups for adults, the BRIDGES program for children and their families, and Camp Phoenix.  Camp Phoenix is a three-day summer camp that provides an environment of support and healing for grieving children.  Calvert Hospice also offers a program of individual grief counseling of up to eight sessions by licensed mental health professionals.

All of the Calvert Hospice Bereavement Services are offered at no charge to the citizens of Calvert County.
