Hospice Challenge 2007

Eight teams competed in the Hospice Challenge 2007 dinghy team race, sailing Flying Juniors on the Patuxent River, off the Solomons Island Boardwalk. The Foundation team, composed of members of the Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation, took the win. Awards were given at the post-race party held at the Southern Maryland Sailing Association Club House in Solomons Island. As a part of Hospice Challenge 2007, a 15-foot Boston Whaler was raffled off. The event as a whole raised over 12,000 for Calvert Hospice, Hospice of St. Mary's, the Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation and Rotary International Scholarship Fund. Set Sail for Hospice Challenge 2007
On July 21, 2007, Calvert Hospice, Hospice of St. Mary’s, the Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation, the Rotary International Scholarship Fund, the Southern Maryland Sailing Association and Screwpile will join together in their unprecedented effort to host Hospice Challenge 2007. The event, scheduled as part of the 15th annual Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge, is designed to raise funds primarily to benefit Calvert Hospice and Hospice of St. Mary’s.
The Hospice Challenge 2007 events will serve as an introduction to the Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge which launches on Sunday. The Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge has drawn sailors from all over to Southern Maryland for the past 14 years. “This is a wonderful opportunity for a whole new group of people to learn about Hospice,” said Stovy Brown, Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation President.
Hospice Challenge 2007 consists of a dinghy team race, post-race party and Boston Whaler raffle. The dinghy team race will take place at 1:45 p.m. on the Patuxent River, off the northern end of the Solomons Island Boardwalk. Teams will man three Flying Juniors, supplied by the Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation, each with a skipper and crew. Entry is limited to the first sixteen teams. Forms and fees must be submitted at the Southern Maryland Sailing Association Club House, on Main Street in Solomons Island, before 12:00 noon on July 21, 2007.
Awards will be given at the post-race party held at 6:00 p.m. in the SMSA Club House. A featured part of the evening will be the raffling of a 15-foot Boston Whaler, outboard motor and trailer. Tickets for the raffle are on sale now, priced at $20. Only 1,250 tickets will be sold, so each entrant has a good chance to win this classic boat.
